Left: The grand staircase was located in the 1st class area. It was a large staircase which in the wreck is now a large empty opening. The grand staircase was used for only 1st class passengers. It was 5 down levels from the boat deck. The staircase featured a glass dome on the ceiling. The walls and stairs had oak panelling and carving with the cherub holding a torch and the timepiece which was "honor and glory crowning time." The panels and walls were built by English craftmanship with William and Mary style. The irons on the banister had ormolu design which was inspired by the French Court Louis XIV. Titanic was the only ship to have a Turkish bath, gymnasium and a swimming pool. Titanic and Lusitania had 4 smokestacks. Titanic was the only ship with the British Union Flag and The White Star Line flag and L she had a railing on the bow. Lusitania didn't have any flags on her crow's nest. She had no railing on the bow.

On sunday April 14, 1912 at 11: 40 pm one of the lookouts Frederick Fleet spots a massive icerberg. He rings the bell 3 times and picks up the phone. 6th officer 25 year old James Moody is the one to answer the phone and Moody ask "What do you see?"
Fleet shouts "Iceberg, right ahead!"
Moody says thank you in a polite way and reports to 1st officer 39 year old William Murdoch who reports hard to starboard. Which quartermaster Robert Hichens turns the wheel as fast as he could. Murdoch warns the engine room full astern. Chief engineer Joseph Bell orders all engines reversed. The warning light comes to boiler room # 6. Frederick Barrett orders all dampers shut. Murdoch watches impatiently as Titanic goes slowly toward the berg. She hits the berg causing gashes on her bottom side. Which the water sprays in the cargo hold and is the first to be completly flooded. Boiler room 5 and 6 sprinkles with ice water. Frederick Barrett orders all men to go under the doors or if one man gets trapped, they head to the stairs. Most passengers were unaware of the collision. Mainly 1st class. A woman asked a steward "why the engines have stopped?" In 2nd class Lawrence Beesly heard the collison while he was reading. Eva Hart and her mother felt a bump during the collision, but they never thought it was something serious. The Allisons from 1st class heard the engines stop. Alice Cleaver the nurse was in a panic. The Allisons believed the collison was not that serious. The men from the smoking room heard nothing but played cards. Thomas Andrews barely felt the collision. The collision was awakened by Captain E.J. Smith a 62 year old man who chose to retire. He went on deck and put on his jacket and turns to Murdoch and asked "What did we hit?" Murdoch answers " An iceberg. I put it hard to starboard. The berg was too close and I put it to port round and she began to hit." Captain Smith asks "Are the watertight doors closed?" Murdoch answers "Yes, sir." Captain Smith orders "Bring the carpenter." Thomas Andrews a 39 year old Irish man the shipbuilder was brought for the investigation. First mail room was completly flooded and he and Captain Smith investigated the cargo hold and the boiler rooms. Thomas Andrews and Captain Smith at the bridge, Thomas Andrews told the captain "With boiler rooms 1 through 5 she can stay afloat. But with boiler room 1 through six, she will sink." The crew orders all the stewards to wake the passengers or tell them to put on lifejackets and go on deck. 1st class passengers were unaware of the danger. 2nd and 3rd class were in confusion. The seamen prepare the boats, Charles Lightoller ask "Captain, is it women and children first?" The captain nods. With 2nd class families were forced to go on deck. But with 3rd class families (mainly men) had to fight the stewards to get their women and children in the lifeboats.
Lusitania was hit by a torpedo from a German U-20 submarine on May 7, 1915 at 2:10 pm. Many passengers felt the explosion. With the boilers lit it caused a second explosion.
